Natural Wonder "Sumidero Canyon"
The Sumidero Canyon is a narrow canyon located 5 km from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, capital of the state of Chiapas, Mexico.
This canyon has cliffs whose height exceeds 1,000 meters above sea level, rising over the course of the Grijalva River, with a depth of more than 250 m.
About 136 million years ago, sediments and calcium minerals — that is, limestone — began to shape the walls of the Sumidero Canyon. It is believed that in ancient times the region where it now stands was submerged under a shallow sea. As we know it today, the Sumidero Canyon began to form 70 million years ago, originating from the tectonic movement of the plates.
