Church and Former Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán

Church and Former Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán
1570 was the year in which construction of the complex began on a site comprising 24 plots, 20 of which were donated to the Dominicans by the town council in 1550.
It was inaugurated in 1608, still unfinished, given the pressing need of the Dominicans to occupy it after being affected by the successive earthquakes of 1603, 1604 and 1608 that ruined their first house.
The main altarpiece was installed in 1612.
The convent and the orchard were completed in 1619.
The orchard came to be a magnificent botanical garden, the wonder of locals and outsiders alike, which is now being restored and revived as an invaluable contribution of its inhabitants.
The plasterwork, the gilding of the interior vaults and the gilding of the covering over the convent staircase were begun in 1659.
The towers were completed in 1660, and in 1666 the major works were declared finished.
The Chapel of the Rosary was built between 1724 and 1731.
