Cañón del Sumidero National Park
The Canyon itself began to form 70 million years ago through the action of tectonic movements called Horst-Graben; which, due to their characteristics of earth mass movement, are called a tectonic pillar and a tectonic trench respectively.
Fifteen million years ago, the sea waters withdrew from this region thanks to geological movements that formed the important mountains of Chiapas, among them the mountains of the Cañón del Sumidero, which began to undergo dissolution and erosion caused by the water itself; this is where the Canyon was born and began its formation, which continues to this day.
