Palenque Archaeological Site

Palenque Archaeological Site
It is one of the most fascinating archaeological cities in Mexico. To visit it is to discover the soul of the Maya world; it is to understand myths, rituals, and beliefs, and to admire the majestic architecture of our ancestors.

The pre-Hispanic city and the Palenque National Park were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987 as one of the main Maya sites that exercised its influence over other settlements in the Usumacinta River basin.

Across an area of 16 square kilometers rise more than 200 architectural structures and buildings, among which the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Great Palace, Temple XI, the temples of the Foliated Cross, of the Sun, and of the Count, as well as the Ball Court, stand out.

In the surroundings of the archaeological site, with its lush vegetation, you can go trekking and appreciate the flora and fauna across an expanse of more than 1,700 hectares that make up the Palenque National Park, home to different types of birds and mammals such as jaguars and howler monkeys.

7 km east of the archaeological site and the National Park lies the town of Palenque, which has all the necessary public services, lodging, restaurants, shops, and markets; and very close by, you can admire and enjoy the Agua Azul and Misol-Há Waterfalls, impressive natural and riverine attractions.
