Miguel Álvarez del Toro Zoo
It was founded by Eliseo Palacios for the study and conservation of the region's wildlife. It is named in honor of the man who served as its director. It sits amid an area covered by medium-height rainforest, providing a habitat similar to the animals' original one. The species on display are specimens of the region's wildlife and endangered animals, which makes this the most important zoo of its kind in the country. Quetzal, tapir, macaws, jaguars, spider monkeys, curassows, otters, spiders and insects are just some of the species found there. A visit to the ZooMAT is one of the greatest experiences of any trip through Chiapas.
We invite you to enjoy the magical colors that will captivate you during a two-and-a-half-hour tour, where you can not only observe the region's wildlife but also rest and cool off while enjoying the sounds of nature. At night you can sharpen your senses on a guided tour, living a completely different nocturnal experience.
At our Domus Libraria Shop you will find souvenirs for your family and friends, as well as written material to expand your knowledge of this State's natural wealth.
To the pride of the people of Chiapas, the ZooMAT is considered by experts to be one of the best in Latin America, not only because it is located within a natural reserve and features spaces that simulate the natural habitat of each species, but also because since its creation it has been committed to Research, Conservation, Outreach and Environmental Education.
